    • What is the holy baptism?

Baptism is a sacrament of the Catholic Church that holds special significance in the lives of believers, as it is a rite of Christian initiation that marks the path towards a spiritual life. As the first sacrament received, it is necessary in order to receive the others, acting as an encounter with God that cleanses sin and makes believers children of God. This rite of adoption also incorporates believers into the Church and confers a commitment to follow Christ and spread His message. Traditionally, baptism is celebrated with the use of water, either by immersing the recipient in water or pouring water over the head of the baptized, while the words are pronounced: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” It is also considered a necessary rite for salvation and to ensure entry into eternal beatitude.

Matthew 28:19: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

    • Requirements to Baptize at Santa Barbara Catholic Church

These requirements apply to children up to the age of 6. Once a child turns 7, they will need to attend Religious Education classes in order to receive the sacrament of Baptism.

      • Only the child’s parents or legal guardians are allowed to register the child for Baptism.

      • If the parents or legal guardians are registered members of or belong to another parish, you must contact your parish and obtain documented permission to baptize your child at Santa Barbara.

      • Parents must bring the child’s birth certificate.

      • For married godparents, they must be married through the Roman Catholic Church (a copy of the marriage certificate is required).

      • For a single godparent, he or she must be truly single and not cohabitating with a romantic partner.

      • The single godparent must provide certificates of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.

      • Single godparents must be at least 16 years of age.

      • Both parents and godparents are required to attend a Baptism preparation class.

      • If you have already taken a Baptism class, you must provide proof. For us, the Baptism class certificate is valid for 1 year.

      • The registration donation is $60.00.

      • If you are baptizing in another parish and are only interested in attending our Baptism class, we ask for a donation.

      • You must bring all the necessary documentation for your child’s Baptism at the time of registration.
